No More Negatives!
Starting immediately, we are no longer allowed to say “there’s nothing to do in Vernon.” It’s become far too easy to use that as an excuse to sit at home like cavemen instead of actually finding out all that there is to do in Vernon. You good people obviously make an effort–why doesn’t the rest of Vernon? Call them on it! If we’re going to make things better, the first thing we’ve got to improve is our collective attitude about Vernon. Feel free to quote me on that.

Indy! The Torch is Going Out!
This week is your last chance to catch (or catch again) the latest installment in the Indiana Jones series. We all had a ball watching it last week, and I know that some of you want to see it one more time before Kung Fu Panda shows up. And for those of you who may not have followed every twist and turn, we’ve got supplemental material for you to check out at the concession stand: the official comic book adaptation, which answers some of those questions that the movie couldn’t stop to tell you–like who were those monkey-men in the temple, anyway? Check it out!

Do the Math, Vernon
Are you STILL driving to Wichita Falls every weekend? What’re you, made of money? Lookit, if your truck gets 15 miles to the gallon, it’ll take you 9 gallons to get to Wichita and back. At $3.75 a gallon, that’s nearly $34 dollars you can add to whatever it is you’re doing in the so-called Big City. Why don’t you think about re-discovering what Vernon has to offer, instead? Over fifty percent of the money you spend in local Vernon-owned businesses actually stays in Vernon. None of the money you spend in Wichita Falls helps your friends, family, and neighbors. Think about it.

Memorial Day Madness!
That’s right! Not only do we have an extra set of shows for you (I know, I know, “the kids need something to do…”), but we’ve got some very special Memorial Day festivities going on! Swing by the theater and check out the schedule in the ticket booth window. You won’t be disappointed!

The Eagle Flats World Championship Road Race!

May 14th, 2008
Oh, Boy, did we have a blast! Thank you to everyone who came out and made this special event so great. The kids were terrific, the parents understanding to a fault, and a good time was had by all (I lost my voice, to my wife’s great delight!)
eagle-flats-raceway.jpg

The course was a brutal downhill suicide run, and the screaming winds coming off of the mountains didn’t help conditions any. Several accidents occurred during the races (thankfully, no drivers were injured).

But what were they all racing for? Why, the loot, of course! Generously donated by Hot Wheels, Speed Leather, and the Vernon Plaza Theater! What a haul!

The REEL Women of Vernon Club!
We’re off to the races, Ladies. The Reel Women will meet once a month to watch and discuss a chick-flick. Swing by at 7 PM, April 24th, and enjoy a great movie and great conversation afterward.

SUMMER MOVIE SURVIVAL TIP #4: BE AN ADVOCATE FOR VERNON
Despite the soaring price of gasoline, many people in Vernon insist on shopping for goods and spending their entertainment dollars in Wichita Falls. You folks are here on the inside, and obviously know better. So, when the summer movies come up in discussion, be sure to mention the Vernon Plaza and ask people if they have come to their local theater. We (and all of the local businesses) need continued support to survive–support we wouldn’t need to beg for if everyone did their shopping in Vernon instead of a city located an hour away.

Besides, YOU know we’re giving away free loot, throwing parties, planning special events, and in general making this THE place to see the summer movies, right? And you’re on the inside track, so you can be Mr. or Ms. Big Shot and know when all of the special activities are going down. Be a leader!

Oh yeah, baby. And you’re going to want in on this action. Trust me. If you’re a fan of Indiana Jones, for example, have I got a great deal for you. Stay tuned! Fliers are coming soon!

Dinner & A Movie on the Square Tomorrow!
Mark your calenders now: the next Dinner & a Movie will be Thursday, APRIL 17th. As much as we love John Wayne, man cannot live on black and white westerns alone. So, in honor of the Spring Season, we’re bringing in Breakfast at Tiffany’s instead. This is just one of the things we’re doing to breathe fresh life into the Downtown Area, and we can’t do it without your help! Tickets are $8 for this special show, and you can see the fliers at Main Street Courtyard Cafe.

SUMMER MOVIE SURVIVAL TIP #3: PAY ATTENTION TO THE RATINGS
Most of the big summer movies will be rated PG-13 for lots of explosions, violence, and various amounts of language. Pay close attention to them, folks, because we will require that kids under the age of 13 be supervised by Adults and Grown-Ups at all times–no cousins, no big brothers, etc. This is for several reasons, the least of which is that you probably don’t want me yelling at your children. But we’ve found that when there are grown-ups around, the kids tend to act like humans and not heathens. So plan your outings accordingly: Parents, Aunts, and Uncles swap off taking the kids, so that everyone has some down time. Look for extra matinée shows, which will save you all money ($4 a person before 6 PM). In the rare instance that we may have an R-rated movie or two during the summer, please remember that we don’t allow kids under the age of 6 into R- and PG-13 rated movies after 6 PM. This is now known as the Harry Potter 5 Rule, when a lot of parents were surprised at how dark and scary the last HP movie was, and found their four year old agreeing with them as they tried to calm the children down in the lobby. So, if you just gotta bring the five year old, please try for a matinée show instead.

April 9th, 2008
Rest in Peace, Charlton Heston
One of the most iconic actors of the 20th century went peacefully in his sleep at the age of 83. Schedule permitting, we may just have to have a special Charlton Heston night here at the Plaza to talk about the movie that, for my generation, typified Heston’s work–Planet of the Apes! Stay tuned!

SUMMER MOVIE SURVIVAL TIP #2: CONCESSION STAND CONFIDENCE
Do you remember last year? Those lines out the door for Spider-Man III and Shreck III? Well, it’s not going to get any better this year. We’ve got a lot of great, Must-See Movies coming out, and the back-up at the concession stand WILL occur. With space being limited, there’s only so many people I can put back there before they start running into each other like The Marx Brothers. But you can help! Take the time while you’re in line to look at our menu and decide what you want. If you’re part of a group, get everyone’s order at that time. That way, when you get to the counter, you can say that you want three large popcorns and four medium drinks, which helps the counter monkeys A LOT. As for the Candy….well, do the best you can. But whenever possible, group your order up so that you (and us) aren’t chasing it down from the children who are too amped up about watching Speed Racer to think about anything else! (and can you blame them?)

Summer Movie Sneak Preview!
Keep your eyes peeled for a special sneak preview of the upcoming summer blockbuster films–absolutely free! That’s right, we’re going to do a free show, approximately 45 minutes long, talking about the plans and schemes for this summer and showing all of the cool summer trailers. Stay tuned!

SUMMER MOVIE SURVIVAL TIP #1: COME EARLY
Here we go, off to the races with some critical information to make sure you get the most out of this summer’s blockbusters. Whenever we have one of our Extravaganza Parties or one of our giveaways, be sure to COME EARLY to the movies on that day. We will be doing our giveaways 10 minutes before showtime, and anyone not in their seats when the giveaway starts simply won’t be entered to win. I know, I know–we’re all on Vernon Time (“Heck, it’s only five minutes away,”) but you need to listen to me now and believe me later–those logjams at the concession stand aren’t gonna cut it. If everyone shows up ten minutes before showtime, then most of you are going to miss the first ten minutes of the movie. So, please, come early to the shows–especially if you have a clutch of children who can’t make up their minds about what kind of candy they want.
